Orava Protected Landscape Area (Oravská prírodná krajinná oblasť) covers a large portion of the Orava region in northern Slovakia, spanning the Žilina administrative region. Characterized by mixed forests, mountainous terrain, meadows, and river valleys, this protected landscape area showcases a variety of habitats that support diverse flora and fauna, including several endemic and rare species. The terrain ranges from foothills to the Orava Highlands and the Roháče or Western Tatras mountain massif segments, offering panoramic views and varied outdoor experiences. Established in 1984, the area protects significant natural and cultural landmarks, such as traditional timber architecture, historic villages, and the Orava Castle, one of Slovakia's most iconic castles perched dramatically above the Orava River. Visitors can explore dense forests dominated by spruce and beech, alpine meadows, wetlands, and numerous streams and rivers feeding into the Orava reservoir, popular for fishing and water sports. The diverse trail network caters to hikers and mountain bikers, with routes leading to scenic viewpoints, waterfalls, and habitats rich in wildlife like lynx, deer, and various bird species. Winters offer opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
